Social networking giant Facebook and former giant MySpace have both been in the news today. Whilst Facebook is continuing to grown and expanding its following MySpace is dwindling so as the Facebook Crush Notifier launches to replace the banned breakup tracker, News Corp has started the sales process of MySpace in an attempt to recoup some of its initial $580 million investment.

Apple's struggles continue as just weeks after the company lost CEO and talisman Steve Jobs to illness chief designer and mastermind behind the iPod, iPad and iPhone's market dominating looks Jonathan Ive looks set to leave Apple to return to his native UK. With two key players in the Apple bandwagon seemingly on the ropse, the company has been spotted stealing Android technology with an internal Apple App using Android's pattern handset lock system.

New mobile handsets are a daily occurrence but today saw news of two of 2011's expected big players. Whilst the iPhone 5 screen leaked hinting towards a larger device with smaller bezel, the Samsung Galaxy S II has appeared for pre-order on Play.com pegged with a £599.99 price tag and May 6th arrival following a MWC 2011 unveiling earlier this month.

Archos Arnova Android tablets outed

Archos has just given the official nod to two new tablets, dubbed the Arnova 8 and Arnova 10. And while you might be jonesing for a top-end Honeycomb effort, these Android-packing slates are all about keeping costs low, which means specs are a tad compromised.

The Arnova 8 crams in a somewhat sluggish 600MHz processor, with a mere 4GB of storage, old-school Android 2.1 and a pesky resistive touchscreen. That said, it only costs $150 (£93) across the pond, so getting het up about its failure to kick it with the Motorola Xoom is hardly worthwhile.

The more capacious Arnova 10 comes with the same 600MHz chip and Android software, but bulks up to 8GB, again using a resistive panel. It comes in at $199 (£123). Each model touts SD support, g standard Wi-Fi and 22 hours battery for music.

What is baffling, however, is Archos’ plan to release two new versions of these Arnova slates in April, with Android 2.3, capacitive panels and 1GHz processors. Word is that the prices will stay the same.

It all begs the question: why buy a compromised Archos Arnova now when you can get a decent one in under two months? Let us know what you think of this somewhat unique strategy over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

LaCie reveals first hard drive with Thunderbolt

LaCie has announced the first ever storage device that supports the brand new Thunderbolt technology, available only on the new Apple MacBook Pros. Apart from Thunderbolt, the new MacBook Pros seem to host a variety of impressive specs.

Previously known as Light Peak, Thunderbolt is a fast peripheral I/O technology standard which possesses a 10Gbps (or 1.25GBps) speed, and can support high-resolution displays.

Running on PCI Express and DisplayPort protocols, LaCie's Little Big Disk has been created for mobile and media professionals in mind, which allows for multiple streams of HD video in minutes instead of hours without any compromises.

Data transferred between peripherals on Thunderbolt technology can reportedly be done 20 times faster than USB 2.0.

The LBD is made up of two 250GB Intel 510 series solid state drives and is enclosed in LaCie's d2 aluminum casing.

Philippe Spruch, Chairman and General Manager of LaCie said, "Thunderbolt technology is a breakthrough in I/O technology and represents the future of mobile computing. Soon you will be able to carry workstation-class power and functionality in compact devices."

The LaCie Little Big Disk has been developed by Intel and is slated to become available from summer 2011. Pricing and storage capacities are as yet unknown.

What are your thoughts on the new standard, Thunderbolt? Head to our Twitter and Facebook pages and tell us. Watch this space for more superfast tech news updates.

Tech Week: iPad 2 launch date and new MacBook Pros released

News of the week

It's the big one, folks: Apple have finally stopped teasing the world with camera-hole sporting cases and crumpled up, coffee-ringed scraps of patents and given us the iPad 2. Well, not quite, but they've given us a date upon which they will give us the iPad 2. We hope. We'll be there for the live coverage on Monday, whatever happens, make sure you're tuned to T3 for all the juicy details, but in the meantime, we have some last minute iPad 2 rumours for you to peek at.

Also on the Apple radar are the new Macbook Pros, which were launched on Thursday. We knew something was brewing when the Apple online store went down...

Further Apple news, although something we're struggling to care about quite as much: the fabled white iPhone 4 was briefly glimpsed on Expansys for pre-order for an eye-watering 920 quid. Surely there's no-one left in the world who could want it that badly now? Especially with the iPhone 5 teetering on the horizon...

Online, the domain name www.sex.com (you can type that in yourself, if you require further details) became the internet's most expensive address, raking in a cool £8.2 million at auction. We wonder what they'll do with it.

In London plans to introduce mobile coverage on the Tube were scuppered when it turned out that no-one wanted it. A massive 75% of those quizzed thought the sombre atmosphere of the capital's underground at rush hour should be kept mobile free.

And the Minority Report future we've all been looking forward to since 2003 (the motion-controlled computing bit, not the all-seeing authoritarian government bit) is finally on the way, with Microsoft announcing that its Kinect peripheral will soon be PC compatible.

Features of the week

On the subject of future dystopian governments (well, sort of), the T3 Team has been thinking long and hard this week about Hollywood's best interpretations of a tech future gone awry. The only silver lining to these horrific visions of humanity's enslavement to technology is that, while you're being herded into floatation tanks by our robotic overlords, there will at least be a role for the T3 team as their fleshy spokespeople.

Focussing on technology altogether less likely to bring about the downfall of humanity, we saw some jolly good mobile phones at this year's Mobile World Congress. None too shabby either were the tablets that also graced the floor at MWC, although with the iPad 2 now officially just around the corner, how slick they will be looking in a week's time remains to be seen. In the meantime, you can weigh up your own decision about which tablet will reign supreme with a look at our latest and hopefully final iPad 2 rumours feature - this time rounding up every last reported sighting of the mystical device and analysing the life out of them.

Reviews of the week

We've had a slew of reviews and hands-ons up this week from our holiday - work, it was work - in Barcelona for MWC, including the HTC Desire S, the LG Optimus 3D, the Galaxy Tab 2, Galaxy S2 and the Xperia Play. There's a lot to be excited about, with 3D bits here and dual-core bobs there - we reckon it'll be a cracking next few months for tech fans.

Also making the rounds in the office this week were Sony's new line of Vaios: the pithily-named C Series, S Series and L Series, as well as the premium Olympus XZ-1 compact camera.

HTC sued over their Facebook phone, ChaCha

HTC revealed its Facebook phone, the HTC ChaCha only recently, but a lawsuit has been filed against HTC by questions and answers service, ChaCha for infringing its trademark.

ChaCha Search Inc. asserts that it owns the ChaCha trademark in the United States and Europe. The claim was filed in the Indian Southern District Court.

The reason behind the lawsuit is that the new smartphone's brand is likely to confuse people, who might think the HTC phone and their service is connected. ChaCha already provides mobile phone services with its mobile website and mobile apps for iOS, BlackBerry and Android devices.

HTC launched the ChaCha with the Salsa at Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona. Each phone has a dedicated Facebook button which allows users to share items on Facebook. Bear in mind though, these aren't official Facebook phones.

The HTC ChaCha features a full QWERTY keyboard and a 2.6 480x320 capacitative touchscreen, with the new version of HTC Sense that is optimised for landscape mode. Running on Android 2.4 Gingerbread, the ChaCha will have a main 5-megapixel camera and a secondary VGA camera.

The Facebook-centric HTC phones are rumoured to arrive on June 17 2011. But will the HTC ChaCha still be called the same? Watch this space.

Which Facebook phone do you like better? Let us know on T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds, and in the meantime, check out our video of the HTC Salsa.

Overpriced handset pre-orders were one of today's top talking points with eagerly awaited Apple and Samsung devices touching down with online retailers at seemingly hugely inflated and pre-emptive prices. Apple iPad 2 news continues to dominate ahead of the second-gen tablets official unveiling next Wednesday. Today saw a fleet of new iPad 2 rumours touchdown detailing what features are out and which are in for the upcoming release. The iPad 2 unveiling will come shortly after it emerged the current iPad enjoys a 93 per cent share of the tablet market.

More tech culls have happened away from the iPad 2 spec sheet as Apple's MobileMe is removed from online stores. Adding to the tech roster today, however, were a number of key tech terms were added to the Oxford English Dictionary with 'sexting' and 'onliner' making the grade.

Tech video news today saw a slightly disturbing arrival from Nintendo as the latest Wii trailer features adult gaming and sexually suggestive bum-spanking and lesbian kiss simulation. On the T3 video front we have been talking exclusively with England rugby star Chris Ashton who took time out ahead of tomorrow's Six Nations tie with France to talk tech, trys and that now infamous swallow dive celebration.

News@8pm: Apple MacBook Pro launched and iPad 2 leaks

Apple iPad 2 details are running rife across tech blogs and forums following yesterdays March 2nd announcement confirmation. Today saw iPad 2 photographs leak, well, at least and iPad 2 replica as well as official iPad 2 branding begin to decorate the launch venue, teasing features of the second-generation tablet.

iPad tablet rivals are having a hard time overcoming the influx of iPad 2 news but HTC and Motorola have both given it their best shots today. Whilst HTC released the first official video of the HTC Flyer tablet, Motorola revealed that Oscar nominees and hosts would be receiving a gold Motorola Xoom tablet in their goodie bags. Nice.

CEO tech giants are traditionally a fusty bunch but two of the biggest player Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg have both been making headlines of their own accord today. Whilst Apple has been criticised for failing to reveal Steve Jobs' successor plans, Facebook founder Zuckerberg has appeared in his own comic chronicling his life and times on the way to social networking god.

Google Android activations caught on video

Still not convinced that Android has won the battle for smartphone supremacy? Then you need to take a peep at the clip below. This super geeky video, produced by Android developers, shows the number of activations from October 2008 until January 2011.

The global graphs begin to spike slowly with the release of the T-Mobile G1, before going into overdrive with the release of the Motorola Droid and then the Samsung Galaxy S. What starts out as a UK and US coastal phenomenon quickly goes global.

With Google claiming over 350,000 Android phones are activated daily, it’s hard to argue that it hasn’t already seen off all comers. This video definitely proves that the Big G has been bossing it for some time now.

News@8pm: iPad 2 release date and Android 3.0 SDK

iPad 2 release date confirmation finally arrived today in the shape of an official invite which popped in the T3 inbox earlier today. It had initially been suggested that the iPad would be delayed until June or would match the release date of the BlackBerry Playbook, but it appears we can put that down to some bad rumour-mongering. You can find out when we will get to see the new iPad and where the event will take place here.

Apple is also in the headlines with talk that iTunes is set to get high quality downloads, while speculation suggests that OS X Lion could receive a major overhaul.

Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb SDK has been released with the final build allowing developer to get their claws into updated features such as more accurate rendering and previews. Google fans will also make a lot of sports fans very happy with news that the media giant will increase YouTube live sports streaming.

HTC Facebook phones the ChaCha and the Salsa, have been given release dates as information of a launch leaked online. Wondering why one of your Facebook friends has gone notably quiet on the update front lately? If he or she has tired of your updates and unfriended you, a Facebook Android app will tell you exactly which people have culled you from their Facebook family.

Angry Birds in the headlines? Well we shouldn’t be surprised these days, but it seems the colossal mobile gaming hit is set to hit Android in March in paid-for form, minus those pesky ads.

OS X Lion: Apple planning major overhaul

OS X Lion isn’t due for release until this summer. But unlike its Snow Leopard predecessor, it promises to bring some major changes to Apple’s desktop software, rather than just a few neat tweaks here and there.

When Lion was first previewed in autumn last year, Apple said it’d be bringing ideas from iOS over to the Mac. But now TechCrunch is claiming this won’t just be seen in a few small areas, but will be part of what they’re calling a, “…much-anticipated UI overhaul.”

Word is that such big changes mean developers will be getting the first early builds of OS X Lion soon. Apple staffers are said to already be using the operating system. The new software comes with Launchpad, a feature that lets you swipe through multiple homescreens, better full screen app support and beefed up Expose, dubbed Mission Control.

With new MacBook Pros coming this week, expect the chatter about OS X Lion to increase even more. Let us know your thoughts on Apple’s plans on our Twitter and Facebook pages.
