News@8pm: iPhone 5 gets smart bezel and Xoom woes

Apple patents ignite excitement over future products from the Cupertino-based behemoth and today saw a beaut of a patent tease as a leaked Apple patent hints towards a smart bezel on the iPhone 5. Porting on-screen buttons to the device's bezel, if implemented the feature could transform the desirable smartphone. Elsewhere on the Apple patent front and Apple has won a $625 million patent battle following a review that found in favour of the fruity tech giant, putting an end to what would have been a hefty fine.

Samsung's Galaxy smartphones have been making headlines as both the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II top digital news stands. First off and the Galaxy S is to get the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update within a matter of weeks. This news was followed by the revelation that the upcoming Galaxy S II has scrapped its announced 1GHz dual-core processor in favour of a 1.2GHz dual-core offering.

 

Motorola's Xoom woes continue as reports circulate of poor sales and the Android tablet is on the receiving end of yet another price drop prior to its official UK arrival. On the poor sales front and industry analyst has claim just 100,000 Xoom tablets have been sold since it hit the US back in February. On to the price cuts and retailer Carphone Warehouse has knocked £20 off the Xoom making the 32GB Wi-Fi + 3G model now just £580 on pre-order.

 

Broader tablet news has seen ups for Apple and downs for BlackBerry. On the upside Apple has sold more than 2.6 million iPad 2 tablets in the weeks since its launch. On the downside however, due to the huge demand for the iPad 2 BlackBerry has had to delay the release of the PlayBook as Apple snap up all the displays.
