News@8pm: Facebook Deals hits UK and iPad 2 details land

Mobile news dominated the headlines today with Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry jumping all over Apple’s usually dominant bandwagon. Whilst the Microsoft Phone 7 mobile OS is set to receive its first major update on February 7th, RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones have been announced as the most popular smartphones of choice in the UK in 2010. With MWC 2011 just around the corner the fleet of 2011 challengers will soon be known.

Apple iPhone 5 continues to steal digital column inches despite being nothing more than hope and expectation. Today saw the mooted device pegged with a May unveiling and production run ahead of a June iPhone 5 release date. In other Apple-based news health-impaired Steve Jobs has been callously attacked by Netgear CEO Patrick Lo at a product unveiling in Australia.

With the expected arrival of the iPad 2 now just days away new rumours and claims of the mooted tablet have seen some features added whilst others are axed. Reportedly off the hit list is the repeatedly suggested SD card slot inclusion whilst a anti-reflective display, dual-cameras and faster chip are all given the nod of approval.

Facebook Places Deals has officially hit the UK with the social network’s location-based deals offering landing on mobile applications today with a number of well known brands getting in on the money-saving act. One other hugely popular entity making news today was app sensation Angry Birds which has announced a Rio movie tie-in to hit app stores this March.

Nokia E7 not coming until April

It seems the Nokia E7 has hit the skids. Again. The Symbian 3 cell, unveiled way back at Nokia World in September and slated for a January release after months of delays, has once again been held up.

Online gadget emporium Expansys says it won’t be shipping the device until 12 April, over seven months since the phone’s announcement. By that stage you can expect the 4-inch touchscreen/slider hybrid to have been well and truly outdated at Mobile World Congress.

Three has already pushed back its E7 plans until April, meaning Expansys’ release date is unlikely to come forward. At a time when Nokia is losing smartphone share rapidly, this is another huge setback and one which smacks of the disastrous N8 launch last year.

Will you be getting a Nokia E7. Or has the Finnish phone maker delayed its latest killer smartphone too long? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Microsoft considering Office for the Mac App Store

Currently, Microsoft doesn't sell its products on the Mac App Store (rather, it is challenging Apple over the App Store trademark), but we may yet see the day when Microsoft Office products will be made available.

We'd seen a glimmer of hope as far back as last year that Microsoft might enter the App store, but nothing materialized then.

Now Microsoft is admitting to looking at the possibility of offering Office in the Mac App Store, but hasn't decided what course of action to take yet.

Microsoft's Amanda Lefebvre told All Thing's Digital's Mobilized blog that they are looking at the option. She said, "It’s something we are looking at." They pointed out though that Microsoft Office is already available on the web in other places.

She said it's an option they haven't ruled out and will see how it relates to their business.

If released on the Mac App Store, Microsoft will have to compete with the already available Apple rival iWork Suite, which sells Pages, Keynote and Numbers.

In addition, Apple takes 30% of app sales, leaving 70% for the developer, so we'll have to wait and see how that condition is dealt with.

However, with Microsoft recently releasing OneNote for the iPhone via the iTunes App Store, we may just see Office on the Mac App store yet.

Tech Week: PSP 2 officially unveiled as NGP and iPhone

News of the Week
Whilst we all had our ears cocked to the ground in search of the long-awaited PSP Phone Sony has only gone and fooled us by officially unveiling the PSP 2 or the Sony Next Generation Portable (NGP) as it will henceforth be known. Following the unveiling we have been treated to a bevy of PSP 2, sorry NGP, information with the first official pictures emerging ahead of a full control demonstrating video hands-on landed. We have also learnt that not all NGP consoles will support 3G connectivity, we’ve heard theexpert verdicts on the PSP 2 replacement and, although official prices have yet to be released, Sony has declared the device won’t cost $599.

Samsung is expected to be one of the big players at next month’s Mobile World Congress attempting to emulate last year’s success of the Android powered Galaxy S handset and Galaxy Tab tablet. Kicking off the week by unveiling four new members of the Galaxy smartphone family and teasing the possible MWC arrival of the Galaxy Tab 2. This was followed later in the week by a leaked conference timetable confirming the Barcelona launch of the Galaxy Tab 2 and Galaxy S 2 as well as official word that the Galaxy S 2 will come equipped with a dual-core processor and Super AMOLED Plus display.

With The Daily iPad newspaper this week confirmed to officially launch on February 2nd, Apple has this week mostly made headlines for the upcoming iPhone 5. Whilst three new job vacancies within the Cupertino company hinting towards iPhone 5 NFC technology inclusion, news that Apple intends to ship 10 million of the mooted handsets at launch has stolen the headlines and much of the focus of a possible arrival date.

Mark Zuckerberg Facebook hack: Company blames 'bug'

Facebook has spoken out on the recent attack on founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s official fan page stating “a bug” was to blame for an errant message that appeared to come from the young billionaire.

Having originally failed to comment on the apparent hack to Zuckerberg’s fan profile, Facebook has since issued an official statement claiming: "A bug enabled status postings by unauthorised people on a handful of pages” It went on to reassure the millions of Facebook users: “The bug has been fixed."

The out of place message caused further privacy and security concerns for the world’s largest social network with the reported bug allowing one unknown user to impersonate Zuckerberg and leave the message: “Let the hacking begin: If Facebook needs money, instead of going to the banks, why doesn't Facebook let its users invest in Facebook in a social way? Why not transform Facebook into a ‘social business’ the way Nobel Price winner Muhammad Yunus described it? http://bit.ly/fs6rT3 What do you think? #hackercup2011.”

Quashing suggestions that the message was posted following a malicious hack of the Facebook system, the internet giant has, in the past days, also denied rumours of any upcoming HTC manufactured Facebook-branded smartphones.

Despite the denials, Facebook has announced it is to host an exclusive launch event this coming Monday, January 31st, with “senior FB people attending and an announcement as well.”

What would you like to see emerge from Monday’s mysterious Facebook event, Facebook phones, Skype compatibility? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest live from the event.

HTC Facebook phone does not exist, says Facebook

Gossip about a HTC Facebook phone has been rife this week, but the social network has moved to calm claims that it’s done a deal with the Taiwanese tech titan.

Dan Rose, Facebook’s head of business development, told a gathering of hacks yesterday that such a phone simply didn’t exist. "The rumours around there being something more to this HTC device are overblown.”

He added, “This is really just another example of a manufacturer who has taken our public APIs and integrated them into their device in an interesting way." When asked flat out if the phone would be Facebook-branded, Rose answered with an emphatic, “No.”

So that’s that. Or is it? HTC may well have that very phone ready to roll at MWC, but it won’t be slapped with a Facebook logo. All will be revealed at the Barcelona gathering in two weeks time.

HTC Desire 2: Just weeks away from MWC ’11, leaks of a possible Desire 2 from HTC have been seen after a picture of the smartpone was taken on a subway. This comes after plans for a HTC tablet was suggested this week. One phone that definitely will be launched at MWC in Barcelona is the Samsung Galaxy 2 but a leaked press conference schedule has revealed an update to the Samsung Galaxy Tab is to be unveiled too.

A BBC iPlayer app is finally coming to iPhone and iPad according to reports and is said to be available from the end of February after plans for such an app were announced a year ago and given the go-ahead by the Beeb six months later. Sky’s 3D channel is said to already be watched by half of the UK’s 3D TV owners according to the channel's director with 70,000 customers signing up in the first few months.

Details of Dell’s future tablet plans have been unveiled showing the Dell Streak 7, a 7-inch tablet version of the 5-inch Streak phone, set to be on Android 2.2. Facebook phone details revealed

Following word yesterday about an HTC-made, Android-packing Facebook phone, more hot gossip about a blower built for the world’s favourite social network has hit the web.

A tipster has spilled the beans to the chaps at BGR, delivering deets on just what we can expect when a Facebook phone does get the official nod. And it’s all about using the cloud and your location.

The Facebook phone is unlikely to have any local storage, with all your contacts, music and data stashed in the cloud. What’s more, location aware coupons will tap into an always-on GPS service, offering you vouchers for stores which you’ve told Facebook you’re interested in.

The GPS offering will also check you in automatically and share your location, although the privacy headache this would cause means it’s likely that you’d have the option of switching such a feature off.

There’ll also be news ticker notifications, with all messages falling into one place, channeling Facebook’s new messaging service which was revealed last year.

Whether this is the same handset that HTC is rumoured to be unveiling at next month’s Mobile World Congress remains to be seen. Would you buy a Facebook phone? Or does this sound like a gimmick too far? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

News@8pm: Facebook hacked and HTC tablet leaks

Social networking mogul Mark Zuckerberg fell victim to internet hackers on his own site after the Facebook creator’s official fan page was taken over anonymously posting the notion of Facebook becoming a ‘social business’. Taiwanese phone giants HTC are to launch two Facebook branded phones at MWC 2011 whilst Sony Ericsson Android phones will be equipped with a single Facebook sign on feature.

Google’s former CEO now executive chairman Eric Schmidt has signalled his intent to spend another decade at the internet search giant. Meanwhile, Google’s Mobile OS Android are unsatisfied with the level of app sales but intend to address the situation with in-app payments.

HTC's Flyer tablet specs have made their way online thanks to a leak that suggests the Android 2.3 tablet will be available to those whose budget can’t quite stretch to an iPad or Motorola Xoom. HP/Palms code named Opal and Topaz’s real identities are yet to be decided with names such as TouchPad, TouchCanvas and DuoPad being mooted.

White Google Nexus S joins the iPhone 4 in the queue for whitening treatment with images of the face-lifted best seller circulating on the internet. Samsung has unveiled four new handsets ahead of MWC 2011 that will run on Google’s Android 2.2, FroYo operating system as well as Samsung TouchWiz UI.

White Google Nexus S spied

It isn’t just the iPhone 4 that’s getting a white paint job this week. Not to be outdone by Apple, it seems Google is prepping a white Nexus S, with a new leaked shot showing the Android phone sporting a new look.

However, unlike the white iPhone 4’s completely new look, the white Nexus S has only been given a lick of paint round the back, meaning the front is still black. Not quite as sleek as it could be, but a neat change nonetheless.

German site BestBoyz reckons a launch is imminent on their patch, but there’s no word on when we’ll be seeing this version here in Blighty.

News@8pm: White iPhone 4 release and iPhone 5 leaks

White iPhone 4: The much-anticipated white iPhone 4 is set to hit the UK in February according to reports with Orange and Three once again listing the device on their websites. However, the release of the aforementioned will be a last hurrah before the iPhone 5 arrives later this year with reports suggesting that Apple will be shipping 10 million iPhone 5 units in time for the handset’s arrival.

The Motorola Xoom will not feature MotoBlur after the Illinois-based phone giant reiterated that the ‘premier’ product will house the Honeycomb operating system. Apple’s forthcoming iPad 2 and iPhone 5 will feature Near Field Communication NFC contact-less payment technology, which is said to coincide with an iTunes store revamp.

The Nintendo 3DS’ RRP price has been mooted to be around the £230 mark but for a limited time only it can be available for sub £200 in both Aqua Blue and Cosmic Black finishes. The 3DS’ rival, the PSP 2, has been the subject of much conjecture over what Sony’s update to their handheld console will look like. Claims that a Japanese forum has obtained official leaked pictures will surely add to the anticipation ahead of the PSP2’s unveiling this week.

A Facebook mix-up lead to the banning of an innocent user after it was perceived by the social network giant that a Kate Middleton was masquerading as her namesake the fiancée of Prince William. The Apple App store, which surpassed 10 billion downloads this week, has opened a Twitter account to provide updates of the latest add-ons.
