Nokia N9 killed off ahead of launch?

The Nokia N9 has had tongues wagging for months, following the leak of a stunning spy shot and some truly stellar specs slipping onto the web. But now insiders are saying the phone will never be released, with next week’s rumoured MWC unveiling not happening.

Reuters reports that two, “…industry sources close to the company,” have said development of the phone has stopped. Nokia has refused to comment, but it clearly throws the while future of MeeGo into jeopardy.

Just yesterday, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop picked out MeeGo as a weak link in his incredible assessment of Nokia’s current position. “We thought MeeGo would be a platform for winning high-end smartphones. However, at this rate, by the end of 2011, we might have only one MeeGo product in the market.”

Elop has already mooted the idea of, “…joining another ecosystem,” meaning MeeGo’s days are already numbered. Word is Nokia is set to team up with Microsoft and release a Windows Phone 7 smartphone. Could it be that the N9 is a casualty of this tech tie-up?
