Nokia N9 specs outed?

The Nokia N9 is one of this year’s most hotly tipped handsets, expected to land at Mobile World Congress next week. But until now, all we’ve had to go in is a rather sharp spy shot and the knowledge that it’ll come packing the all-new MeeGo OS.

 

But now eagle-eyed gadget lovers at NokiaPort.de appear to have laid their mitts on a spec sheet for a top-end MeeGo device, most likely the N9. Having rooted around in MeeGo sources files, they’ve got hold of some impressive stuff.

 

The new blower is said to pack a lightning fast 1.6GHz processor by Intel, 512MB of RAM, a 480x854 panel, NFC tech, HDMI out, 21Mbps HSPA+, plus Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

 

MeeGo is a joint tie-up between Nokia and Intel, so that chipset looks like a dead cert for the N9. The rest of the spec sheet is a bit of a doozy too and suggests Espoo is about to fling itself firmly into contention with its burgeoning welter of rivals.

News@8pm: Apple iPad 2 spotted and PSP Phone leaks

Following The Daily arrival yesterday one eagle-eyed journo has claimed to have spotted the iPad 2 in the wild at the iPad newspaper launch event. Sporting a front-facing camera and, well, that’s about all said spy could tell us. Other Apple news today saw the big A announced from March 31st all publication application will have to offer in-app purchases of their paper counterparts.

Sony’s PSP Phone, newly dubbed the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, has been leaking left right and centre and today was no change. Having leaked its in-store advertising booths, the first television advert for the long-awaited gaming-centric smartphone has also appeared with some Android adapting handiwork.

 

Call of Duty is a gaming franchise known for its meticulously anal details and inability to look at the lighter side of life. Today Epic Games looked to rectify that launching a CoD parody, Duty Calls to promote its upcoming Bulletstorm title. In other gaming news, EA has released details of upcoming FIFA 12 features set to hit the footballing franchise release this autumn.

 

Google Android Gingerbread is official but the big G has announced it is uncertain as to the operating systems smartphone use. One thing it is sure about, however, is the arrival of is new online market place which has gone live offering online access to the Android world of applications.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb: Google unsure of smartphone plans

Android 3.0 Honeycomb is undoubtedly going to give Apple’s iOS a hell of a lot to think about when it lands on a slew of killer tablets in the next few months.

 

But the latest version of Google’s open source OS, revealed in full at a San Francisco event yesterday, is still some way off heading to smartphones. That’s according to Google’s Hugo Barra, who admitted that plans to move cross platform were still sketchy.

 

Quizzed about when Honeycomb’s features would be heading to Android blowers, Barra said, “We really don’t know,” he said. “That’s a conversation we are just beginning to have right now internally with the team.”

 

That will no doubt concern those who think Android, while surging ahead, is becoming fragmented beyond repair. Barra did say, though, that some Honeycomb skills will be heading to mobiles at some point. “A lot of the things we have created for Honeycomb will make their way back into phones as well–things like the visual themes, some of the thinking on notifications, for example.”

 

That suggests that any mobile update will have a different code name, with Honeycomb reserved solely for slates. Is Google allowing its OS to become fragmented too easily? Or do you prefer its open platform? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

News@8pm: LG gives NFC a push and The Daily launches

LG came out of the starting blocks with a couple of top stories today. First was news that it was giving NFC payment tech in the UK a real push and looking for a way to make the necessary infrastructure a reality with its smartphones (pictured). It also released a bunch of official details on its upcoming tablet, the G-Slate. Samsung brought us further tablet news, with reports that 15 per cent of Galaxy Tabs have been returned since its launch.


The Android gossip wheel kept turning as further news filtered out about the oft-rumoured Google Music. Google made headlines yet again with an attack on Microsoft’s Bing search engine, which it claims is copying its results. Microsoft has bigger fish to fry, however, issuing a ‘critical’ warning over a new bug in IE.

No day is complete without its share of Apple news, and today was no exception. The iPad 2 purportedly had its display leaked in a new photo, while word came from the street that iOS 4.3 is getting closer by the minute. There was more White iPhone 4 news, with speculation that it’ll be dropping in March, and finally we had the launch of The Daily – the new iPad newspaper - which was leaked ahead of the official announcement. Not to be outdone, the New York Times annoucned its own subscription based iPad rag too.


In gaming news, we brought you an exclusive hands on with the new Nintendo 3DS, plus word that a new, 3DS-based Super Mario Bros game is coming soon. On top of that Call of Duty launched the ‘First Strike’ DLC package for Black Ops today, its first slice of multiplayer DLC action.

iPad 2 specs revealed:

With the expected unveiling of the heavily rumoured iPad 2 now just days away, the second-generation Apple tablet is to launch featuring a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, new reports on potential iPad 2 specs have suggested. The latest seemingly insider speculation comes from an analyst at Concord Securities who claims to be privy to the eagerly awaited final specifications for the iPad 2 as well as the expected date of announcement with the mooted device reportedly to be officially unveiled next Wednesday, February 9th.

PSP2 vs 3DS battle hots up:

In console news, we've had a bumper day. Not only have T3 readers voted the PSP2 their console of choice, but we've had our mitts on the new and shiny Nintendo 3DS - pictures here.

MWC 2011 rumours:

After weeks of unsubstantiated MWC 2011 rumour, we're started to see some clearer tips coming through, such as today's heads up on the LG Optimus 3D phone. Samsung have been busy too, dropping in an official video of the Samsung Galaxy S 2, also tipped for MWC 2011 greatness. Samsung have had a busy day indeed, also firing out the Samsung Wave II, their second Bada phone.

Sony ereader iPhone app trouble:

Apple has opened a new front with Sony by apparently banning Sony's ereader app from the big S from the App Store. Will Sony respond? We'll let you know as soon as we do...
